Getting Aboard the Forklift
One of the keys to maintaining operator safety is the 3-point dismount. Even though this is often overlooked, it is a main factor in keeping operator's safe. For example, several years ago, at a forklift rally, a contestant perfectly carried out the course at a lift truck rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his machine and totally forgot to make a 3-point dismount. He failed to win the competition because he judges ended up docking marks from his overall score.
The very serious problem of dismounting and mounting the lift truck is included in training. Having the operators wear their seatbelts could also help save their lives in event of any tip-overs. It is essential to understand that if the center of gravity of a loaded lift truck moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation can happen. Skilled drivers seldom ever run into a tip-over situation, although, it is very important that they are prepared for that risk in case it occurs.
Dismount/Mount
The importance of properly dismounting and mounting any type of forklift, including even a low platform pallet jack is vital to ensuring the driver stays safe. Far too many injuries occur when complacency happens around these machines. Some of the serious situations include: Driver's catching their loose clothing or coveralls when dismounting and could end up falling and wrenching their back. At times, the operator can sprain or break an ankle when they step off of a forklift. The operator can accidentally break an arm when falling and slipping off of the pallet jack. The driver could suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris while they are still hanging onto the handhold with one hand.
Having 3 points of contact is essential when dismounting or mounting a forklift in order to keep you safe. The 3 points could be obtained by 2 hands and 1 foot or by 1 hand and 2 feet. This stance is exactly like climbing up or down a ladder. Don't forget to face the machinery at all times. Drivers normally tend to jump or hop off the machine or to face away from the machine and these mistakes really reduce the overall risk of hurting themselves.
