Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is provided by large industrial batteries which have to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety procedures must be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is vital to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the post should not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Do not permit things like matches or lighters to be utilized while an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
