To be able to reduce forklift maintenance, regular inspections could help you save greatly over the long haul use of your equipment. The standing joke in the business is a forklift technician coining the saying "Pay me now, or pay me later," as it generally costs more to procrastinate when it comes to lift trucks. For example, the minor fixes that are not repaired can eventually turn into costly repairs.

Tilt Cylinders
If they are not checked, oil leaks are a really serious concerns. On a regular basis, the equipment must be inspected for oil leaks and/or damage. Oil leaks could result in really dangerous uncontrolled movement of the mast. Whether the leaks are in the cylinder or outside, the outcome can result in cylinder drift and loss of vital fluid. When damage or leaks are detected, you usually will need to replace the entire cylinder assembly or the seals.

Chains
Be sure to pay attention because you don't want mast lift chains to stretch beyond acceptable limits. Watch carefully for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Check frequently with a chain wear gauge so as to monitor the wear. If the chain is worn beyond 2% or rusted, you should replace the chain. Following these guidelines would help keep your machinery functioning optimally.

Mast
The mast needs to be moving smoothly down and up when using the lift control lever. Be sure to check to see if the mast is tilting backwards and forwards in a smooth way. You may have to lubricate the mast strip sliding surfaces if the sliding surfaces are binding. Lubricate their fittings also, since there is a fitting located on both sides of the inner mast. The lift bracket side rollers are one more lubrication spot.

Forks
Check the tines and check for cracks, damage and wear. It is essential to remember that worn or cracked forks can possibly fail without any warning. Of course, any fork damage means taking the truck out of service at once. If the cracks are deeper than just on the surface, they must be replaced since they truly can't be safely fixed.
