Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the big refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main complex or building. Adding to the safety aspect, it is required that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure which could just be accessed by authorized personnel. It is very important for the safety of the operator, and everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
The fuel enclosure itself has to be protected from vehicle impact. Utilizing retaining systems such as concrete bumpers for instance, could accomplish this task. Other retaining methods could be used. It is also necessary to have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Additionally, anybody who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also has to be trained to safely and effectively operate the fire extinguisher. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a forklift should be correctly trained. This training includes a classroom portion in addition to hands-on training. When the training sessions have been finished, the person should be tested in order to show that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also covers the proper method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheets must be situated in all facilities where lift trucks are operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are utilized on site. This will also include the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all employees at all times. If any exposure incident occurs for instance, the individual needs to be evaluated right away. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not sure if medical treatment is required, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a doctor if you really believe it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
